For Monday, October 1

This weekend you have time to play catch up.

Spend a couple of hours on English homework if possible.

You can:
Begin or even complete your creative writing assignment for Anthem.  (I am willing to read a draft).
Work on your research paper-build notes at evernote.com or with traditional notecards.

For Thursday, September 27

Write a 2 page essay comparing the speaker in the poem "Invictus" with Equality, the narrator of Anthem.

You can use the following as a template or as your thesis statement:

The speaker in Henley's poem "Invictus" and the narrator of Rand's Anthem overcome the obstacles of life to become heroic conquerors.

(If you do not want to use this exact thesis, replace the vivid verbs, adjectives, or nouns to better fit your analysis.)

This is a draft.  I know we are working to gain the skills of literary analysis.  Try to use embedded quotes-remember quotation sandwiches:  provide context, quote your material, offer interpretation.  Make sure each body paragraph has a topic sentence.  Include an introduction and conclusion.  I will grade this draft and return it to you for corrections.  This will be a working document.

Try to stay within a 500 word limit.  That is about 2 or 2 1/2 pages.  You should expect to spend about an hour or, maybe, an hour and a half on this draft.

For Friday, September 21

1.   Read Anthem Chapters 4,5,6, and 7. Annotate as per your bookmark. We will not have a quiz on Friday, but we will have extensive discussion. I will expect you to be able to dialogue about these chapters in a meaningful and analytical way.

2.   Select one of the images below as your favorite representation of chapters 4,5, 6, or 7.  Write a paragraph describing why you made your selection.  Give evidence from the novel to support your reasoning.

For Wednesday, September 19

We will spend half of class on Wednesday in the computer lab working on your research papers.  Make sure you have either web sites or print materials to work from.  At this point, you need to begin synthesizing your research materials.  Make sure to evaluate the validity of your source.  You will be preparing an annotated bibliography, so you need to be familiar with two sources that you can work with during class.

Additionally, read Chapter 3 in Anthem.  Read for detail and understanding.  Good job in class today.

Thursday, September 13, 2012

For Monday, September 17

Read Anthem through Chapter 2.  Come with your novel annotated as per your bookmark.  You did a great job today imagining the "discussion in the World Council boardroom."  Continue to imagine Equality's world.  Mentally respond to the question:  How would this make me feel?

On Monday, you will write a description of Equality's world, practicing our usage of "embedded quotations" or "quotation sandwiches."  Please make sure you have highlighted and marked sentences/paragraphs that describe Equality's society.

RESEARCH REMINDER:
Continue to look for sources.  We will have a 1/2 day next Wednesday devoted to research papers.  The more sources you have on that day, the better you will be able to work on your outline/paper. I will be available for questions.

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

For Thursday, September 13

Read Chapter 1 in Anthem.  If you have time, find a second source for your research paper.

Ethnic Cleansing Center”
If you do not have the cartoon at home, try googling the image.  I cannot get the cartoon to paste onto the blog.

QUESTIONS

1. What do each of the headstones in the cartoon represent?

2. What is the main idea of the cartoon?

3. Choose three of the groups depicted in the cartoon. For each, what were the causes and
events that led to the murder of many members of the group? Use specific historical information for your answers.

I challenge you to bring one source (printed or posted in evernote) for your research paper to class on Tuesday.

Bring the novel Anthem to class on Tuesday.

For Friday, Sept. 7

A long time ago,

in a galaxy far, far away,

young Jedi were faced

with their greatest challenge yet…

a research paper.

Daily, they were encouraged

by Master Yoda to remember…

“Do or do not.  There is no try.

Survive your research paper you will.”

For Homework:  Think!  Select!  Plan!
